| The literature confirms that absenteeism among Indigenous students is markedly higher than among non-Indigenous students. They also have higher rates of suspension and lower retention. Despite new government initiatives in the last 20 years to improve eduactional outcomes for Indigenous students they continue to be the most disadvantaged student group in Australia. The area of English language and literacy learning is identified for attention and action.
