Information Literacy Cycle

Defining: Recognise information needs within a problem

  • Clarify the problem, identify key issues

  • Identify the need to access additional resources as reference tools, support documentation or working papers.

Locating: Identify sources of information

  • Evaluate a range of information sources dirctly relevant to the problem

  • Choose appropriate sources

Selecting: Develop successful search strategies. Evaluate the information

  • Choose the appropriate search tool

  • Construct precise search strategies

  • Check the authority, validity, currency and timeliness of the source

  • Apply critical literacy skills before proceeding

Organising: Reconstruct knowledge taking into account additional information

  • Assemble the information

  • Organise the information

  • Reassess the situation taking into account the additional information located in context of the problem.

Presenting: Communicate solutions to information problems

  • Analyse and evaluate the possible solutions making an informed decision.

  • Present information in an appropriate domain specific format

Evaluating: Checking on the outcome

  • Review the processes used. Respond to feedback

  • Reflect on what has been learnt
