Vocational Learning Unit
CURRICULUM SUPPORT DIRECTORATE
The Vocational Learning Unit within the Department's Curriculum Support Directorate is
supporting schools with a range of programs and activities to ensure that students have
opportunities to participate in curriculum initiatives focussed on vocational learning.
The following support is available to schools to better prepare students for the
transition from school to work, further education and training:
- a Stage 5 Work Education course which is being piloted in over fifty schools
- careers markets; tertiary education, employment and training seminars which provide
personal information to students about post-school options
- the FutureWork resource package which provides teachers with information on the changing
nature of work, the workplace and trends in the labour market
- the Workplace Learning Handbook which will comprise detailed and comprehensive
information to support the implementation of the full range of workplace learning programs
(to be available Term 4 1998)
- industry specific careers information and resources such as An introduction to
hospitality CD-ROM (to be available Term 4 1998)
- the Individual School to Work Plans Program support package for teachers which will
assist students to develop individual school exit plans (available to selected schools in
1998)
- external programs which contribute to enterprise and career education such as Australian
Business Week, E-Team (Australian Quality
Council) and Young Achievement Australia's Business Skills and A Business Enterprise
by enabling students to develop business skills
- Enterprise Days which assist students to interact with young people in enterprises
- the Recognition of Work Related Skills project which aims to document student
participation in a broad range of work-related activities
- the Teachers in Business program which provides teachers with professional development
opportunities in industry
- students to learn about work and workplaces and are generally delivered by careers
advisers who assist students to explore and consider a range of school and post-school
options available to them.
