Tom Bentley is Director of Demos. Demos is Britain's leading independent think tank and research institute based in London. Launched in 1993, its role is to help reinvigorate public policy and political thinking and to develop radical solutions to long term problems.

The Topic:

Key questions that Tom would like to explore are:

  • How do practitioners view research? 
    - How does research influence     practice? 
    - What research do they find most useful and accessible?
    - How     do practitioners  believe the links between research policy and practice can be improved?
    ***The debate around these questions will feed directly into another event that ECEF are hosting with Australian researchers

Tom will use the context of his own research around the following questions to present a range of practical approaches to the implementation of community/work based systems of learning.

  • What are the skills that young people need to face the long term challenge of living in a knowledge-based, diverse society
  • How do current educational structures need to change to deliver an expanded set of skills and competencies needed in the 21st century
  • What are the practical implications for curriculum, the role of teachers and the place of business in education
