He has also addressed major professional associations, taught and conducted assessment research projects in Australia, Hong Kong, France, Ireland, the United States, Australia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Canada and Britain. After training as a secondary Science and Mathematics teacher Patrick spent several years teaching in Rural and Metropolitan Victoria. He then began teaching in the State College of Victoria where he began work in the field of education measurement and test design. Patrick's Masters Degree focused on the effectiveness of extension services such as Museums and his doctorate examined apprenticeship training assessment matters as seen by the teacher, the employer and the apprentice. After completing his doctorate Patrick spent some time in working with the Psychological Corporation of New York on the development and equating of attainment tests and general intelligence assessment. From New York, he went to Hong Kong where he began an interest in language and literacy assessment working with the University of Hong Kong. He returned to Australia to head the Victorian Education Department's Research and Measurement Unit where he led the development of the first Literacy and Numeracy profiles which became the model for the National Curriculum and Profiles. After working in the State Department Patrick headed for teacher education again and work as Head of Department and Director of the Assessment Research Centre at RMIT. During that time the Assessment Research Centre established a national and international reputation for its assessment work and was established as an ANTA key Centre for Vocational Research for 1998. His inaugural lecture in September 1997 was entitled 'Developing Assessments in Schools and Industry' and is available on the web. ____________________________________________________ I encourage you to ask questions and add your input to the various issues raised by Patrick. By using the 'reply' function in your email, the related messages will be 'threaded ' in the archive. Patrick will use a convention of Patrick (guest) as the start of the subject of his messages. In this way the "guest" traffic will be easily separated form any other traffic that occurs over the same time period. Patrick tells me he will post his first message by tomorrow morning. regards Janine Bowes |
