Item 4 of 8: New Apprenticeships and Journal of Vocational Education

Subject: VocEd: Mike Frost (Guest) - New Apprenticeships and Journal of Vocational Education

New Apprenticeships The response to my request for information on the proposed trialling and implementation of New Apprenticeships in 1998 and beyond has indicated that coordinators see a need for information to be more readily available. The Australian National Training Authority is running a number of one day workshops in different states throughout the year focussing on New Apprenticeships. In addition State Training Authorities appear to be appointing VET in Schools project officers. State Training Authorities are also providing information sessions during the year.

The first of the Training Packages also are due for release soon and will no doubt help fill the information void.

I would still be interested in any comments you might care to make in relation to my original set of queries particularly:

What industry areas are being targeted for both school-based traineeships and apprenticeships?

What are the range of delivery models being proposed?

What problems are currently being identified by schools?

How will the Training Packages affect school-based training options? Will schools have the capacity to respond flexibly to training needs? How attractive will schools remain as training providers to trainees, apprentices and industry?

JOURNAL OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS VETNETwork has been partially funded by the ASTF to produce an annual journal for those involved in VET in schools programs. We believe there is a place for such a journal. Do you?

The journal will be designed as an informative and interesting collection of articles of national relevance. We plan to invite contributions from those who have contributed in a variety of ways to making vocational education and training in schools a reality.

At the same time we would like to hear from anyone who has some ideas about what could be included in such a journal. Who do you consider is significant in establishing the place of VET in schools and who could contribute.

We are very much at the design stage and are looking at a possible thematic approach - New Apprenticeships might be a possibility for example. As well we are examining possible sections - policy, outstanding projects, PD, research, international perspectives, student achievements, open learning initiatives are possible examples. If you have any ideas please email them to VETNETwork
