Hi to all

Thanks to those who replied with news of unusual courses. It's great to hear about what others are doing.

The issue of sustainability was raised by Andrea. I have a few suggestions.

1. Place a substantial bet on Jacqui Asser's horse and hope like hell it wins.
2. Use your off-the-job training resources to set up enterprises, eg. Catering Company, Selling fruit & veg, Set up a local tourist venture, make & sell wine, etc. I know these things are not easy to do and require a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment from the coordinator involved.
3. Sponsorship. I don't think this area has been looked at much yet in Australia. I got the idea from Ty Emerson in the ACT. I believe that there is potential among some of Australia's larger companies for this type of activity.
4. Advertising. I don't know much about this yet. But I believe that schools could sell advertising space eg. on the paper bags used in the school canteen etc.

I know many of you think my "business approach to education" is crass. However, schools never get enough money from Government and this is not likely to change. I believe that it is far better for a school to run a professionally operated business (and this may involve employing some experts) than struggling with school fetes, chook raffles etc.

I'm really keen to hear other views on sustainability, because this is an issue that we must address urgently. Time is running out.

cheers
Janelle
