Hi to all, and thanks to those who responded with unusual courses. I'm still waiting to hear from some school administrators.

Many of you will be familiar with the success of the Jobs Pathway Program at Marsden State High School. This experience has further reinforced my belief that teachers are not the best judges of what constitutes an "employable school leaver". Many of the students we placed in jobs were deemed "not employable" by teachers, who have been very surprised at the success of these students in the workplace. Conversely, students who teachers deemed as "good prospects" have struggled with the reality of working life.

The Jobs Pathway Program is regarded by some as "not the core business of schools" and we have copped some criticism from those who believe that the school's role is to educate, not to find jobs for students.I believe that schools in NSW have been told not to apply for JPP by their education dept.(Is this true?).
What is your view of the Role of Schools?
Do you think schools should be involved in Job Placement for school leavers?
Is it OK for schools to make profit on this type of venture? This has been a somewhat controversial issue and I look forward to your responses.

What do I think? I believe that our program has been more successful than most, and I'm very proud of that fact. I'd don't think it matters much who provides the service as long as the provider has an understanding of school leavers, and experience in the labour and job market. Many school that conduct successful Industry Placement Programs have the links with industry and the expertise, and show me a school that can't make good use of some extra funds.

Till tomorrow
Cheers
Janelle
