Recent Work

The following provides a brief overview of work recently undertaken by Dave. More detail is available as background reading where indicated.

Changemakers - Lead consultant for a national initiative of active citizenship involving young people (from schools and community organizations) in enterprising activity that contributes to, and shapes, their community. (Developed by Community Service Volunteers and other national charities, now strongly supported by the British Government (DFFE).) Changemakers worked closely with Demos, the British think tank to develop the case for community based learning.

Transition Teams - A DFEE funded 'self help' careers education programme that involves students in leading the investigation and dissemination of careers advice. (CCDU University of Leeds). A modified version of this programme called Motivated by Choice has been developed for disaffected students and truants in the marginalized communities and schools of Liverpool and Newcastle (UK).

Community Springboard - A partnership approach to tackling the issues of social exclusion and high exclusion and high employment by enabling local government, voluntary sector and national agencies to take positive action regarding community enterprise and lifelong learning.

Complementing the Placement - Developing a new approach to work experience which complements the traditional placement and enables students and young unemployed people to experience the generation of work and to learn about the realities of the contract culture and flexible labour market (1998-1999 pilot funded by the British Government).

Review of Government Policy with respect to the opportunities and challenges facing young person led (14-24) enterprising projects of active citizenship and self managed learning teams (undertaken in mid 1999 for UK Department for Education and Employment.

Skills Across the World - a Dusseldorp Skills Forum initiative to involve young trades people working in trade and learning projects in the developing world (in partnership with local rural communities). Dave has been a consultant to the Dusseldorp Skills Forum over the last seven years.

Publications

Enhancing Enterprise Skills - a pack for schools on how they can help young people develop their enterprising skills through designing and managing community development projects (Changemakers 1999).

Empowerment 2000 - a pack for local social, educational and economic development agencies in the north and south which monitors how they empower local people (Commact Commonwealth Association 1999).

Motivated by Choice - a resource pack tackling disaffection and the careers education of young people who do not feel they have a traditional future (Merseyside TEC 1998).

Transition Teams Resources Packs - a pack to help teachers/trainers develop the careers education and personal development of young people who are about to make the transition to post compulsory destinations of learning (CCDU 1996 and 1997).

Changemakers File - a resource file for schools and youth organisations on how to develop, monitor and accredit young person led community development activity, (1995-1999).

Winning Performance - a manual for entrepreneurial teams within a manufacturing company to improve business performance (ICI Group Technology 1998).
