Bright Futures and You!

Guest Principals
May 12 - 18, 2000

Three school principals feature as guest contributors to the Bright Futures online event. They have all been involved in school to work transition programs for their schools for some time. They are enthusiastic and committed to the importance of learning outside of the classroom and their schools are part of successful community partnerships. The brief notes below give some background on each of them.

Box Hill Senior, located in Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs, offers a broad range of programs including more than a dozen VET courses. The school has developed a number of unique approaches including the operation of a commercial restaurant and conference centre and a Sport and Recreation program with high profile partners like the Australian Football League, Tennis Victoria and Victoria Titans Basketball Club.

Students travel from all parts of Melbourne to attend Box Hill Senior with more than a third of students travelling three to four hours per day to and from school.

Josephine Lynch
Albany Senior High School
Western Australia

Josephine Lynch is currently Principal of Albany Senior High School on the WA South Coast. When she took up the position in 1985, her focus was on making post compulsory schooling relevant for all students.

Chairperson of the local VET in Schools Cluster since its inception, she has also been involved with ASTF projects, Structured Workplace Learning and Skills Recognition. The Cluster initiated a very innovative Skills Recognition Project in 1999 which resulted in a state wide trial by the Curriculum Council this year. The school has applied for Registered Training Organization status and Jo believes that this is very relevant to the schools workplace interface.

Her understanding of the world of work has been strengthened by her other interests which have seen her serve for over ten years on significant management committees such as the Great Southern Development Authority, the State School Teachers Union, WA Secondary Principals Association and the Great Southern Regional College of TAFE.

Liaison with community personnel such as the Executive Officer of the Area Consultative Committee and the Regional Development Officer of WADOT has also been a feature of her work in this area.
