Bright Futures pdf help pages.

The Bright Futures document is available online as a pdf (portable document format). This guide is here to help you if you are unfamiliar with using the pdf format on the web.

You may already have your browser configured to display pdf's by using the Acrobat reader plug-in. If you don't have the Acrobat reader you will be prompted to download the pdf to your local disk. You will still need the Acrobat reader to view it.

If you need the Acrobat reader click on its icon below and you will be taken to the Adobe site so you can download it. Follow the instructions.

This guide has information on the following:

  1. Opening a pdf in a browser.
  2. Configuring your browser to display pdf's.
  3. Using pdf bookmarks.

A web page can link to a pdf file. If your browser is configured to display pdf's it will launch the Acrobat reader. It will look something like the example on the left. You can see the Acrobat icon and tool bar displayed below the browser toolbars.

(This example shows the Bright Futures pdf displayed inside Netscape 4.7 on a MacIntosh machine.)

To get your browser to display pdf's open the browser's preferences or options and choose Applications. The example on the left shows that the browser will display pdf's using the Acrobat reader. These settings can be adjusted by clicking the edit button.

(This example shows the applications category of Netscape 4.0 preferences on a Windows machine.)

Bookmarks in a pdf are like an index or table of contents. They are displayed to the left of the main document window. You can open the bookmarks window by clicking on the double arrows next to the page magnification size at the bottom left of the main document window (fig. 2 in the example on the left) or by clicking the show/hide navigation pane icon to the right of the print icon in the top left corner of the pdf window. Fig. 1 shows the bookmarks tab. Click on any of the bookmarks to navigate to that place in the pdf. Fig. 3 shows page magnification information. This can be used to adjust how big the page looks.
