Subject: VocEd:Brigid Freeman (guest)-New Priorities and Directions for the ASTF

Where to from here? In line with the vision of the Australian Student Traineeship Foundation - "sustainable work and life transitions for all young Australians", the new priorities and directions include:

placing greater emphasis on the pivotal, and developing role of industry partners;

continually evaluating achievements and improving the quality of "school-workplace learning programs" incorporating workplace learning;

improving the sustainability of initiatives implemented.

These initiatives reflect the outcomes of the 1997 ASTF stakeholder consultations, and the new objectives of the organisation.

Particular attention will be given to those programs working towards overcoming areas of disadvantage - including isolation of remote communities; the particular challenges to those implementing "school-workplace learning programs" in metropolitan areas; and initiatives targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities.

In addition, the ASTF will be developing guidelines for programs seeking ASTF support to develop, conduct and evaluate initiatives involving Year 9/10 students.
