AUSMUSIC is preparing a database for monitoring/assessment purposes- we have 500 schools involved in our program and 200 licenced providers offering our accredited music industry training courses around Australia. Our industry has indicated their preference for "levels of competence" to be recorded, as many of our graduates apply for a job and that's a good sifting mechanism for them.

We're also starting to place out training programs on-line. Our website is http://www.ausmusic.org.au . Have you any suggestions re our database?

I had a quick glance at your website which looks most impressive, adding a task bank would certainly add value to your site. It will also encourage people to apply for RPL or RCC if they could review the assessment requirements prior to considering enrolling in the courses.

In regards to the levels of competence, from our research activities there seems to be a demand from both employers, students (or candidates) as well as some higher education institutions, to have recognition for higher levels achieved. This is still however quite a hot debate. Maybe some people from WA who have been working within the 'competent with merit' reporting system could provide comments on industry acceptance and demands for levels.

Does the music industry have any preferences for how many levels to be recognised and how are you going to determine the criteria for each level? It is a difficult task, yet the benefits will surely outweigh the amount of time and energy involved in establishment. I suggest that once these criteria are established and validated, then displaying them on your website will also help achieve transparency and fairness of your assessment system.

Shelley
