Erindale College Indigenous Students in Vocational Education
ECEF Priority Areas project
by Kate Jarvis

Erindale College, a year 11 and 12 government college in the Tuggeranong Valley of the ACT, has high profile programs in both vocational education and elite sports.

The Indigenous students in Vocational Education program at Erindale College was initiated to develop pathways from schooling to training, further education and employment for Indigenous students. The project aims to inform them about vocational courses, provide mentors for their vocational studies and support them in accessing vocational placements and job placement.

The program has been running since February 2000, it began with twelve students. Three of these students graduated with an ACT Year 12 Certificate, one was awarded a traineeship in Information Technology.

A key objective of the program is to build the confidence and self-esteem of Indigenous students at the college.
An Indigenous Mentor has worked with the group providing a program of personal goal setting, time management techniques, interpersonal relations and self image. He was also able to provide advice on various issues relating to school, training and studies.
A climate of trust and cultural grounding emerged from the Mentor's work with the group.
Further contact with a variety of Mentors from within the ACT and the wider Indigenous community is planned.

Students and their families have commented on the warmth and support that the students have for each other, this has been an important factor in helping to improve attendance at classes. Students are happy to come to college, where they have their own home study room equipped with a computer.

The project has the ongoing support of the college, the ACT Indigenous Education Unit, the students, their parents, and the community.
