WADU -  the National Vocational Learning Strategy for Young Indigenous Australians, was launched in Alice Springs on Friday 10th September by Dr David Kemp, Commonwealth Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs.

WADU
means
‘ together in partnership and trust’

in the Kaurna peoples’ language of Adelaide Plains, South Australia

The strategy is a joint initiative of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s Training Advisory Council (ATSIPTAC) and the Australian Student Traineeship foundation (ASTF). It has been developed to promote best practice vocational education programs through building partnerships between educators, businesses and communities to improve educational success and create better vocational opportunities for young indigenous Australians.

The WADU strategy will fund a number of pilot VET in school projects across Australia and develop a How to Guide and Professional Development material to support the introduction of Vocational Learning for Indigenous students in years 9-12.

In conjunction with the launch of the strategy:

  • the first WADU award for best practice sponsored by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) was presented to the Alliance of Cape York Schools (see details)
  • Wadu-net was announced - an online network for workers involved in vocational learning for Indigenous students (Wadu-net homepage)
