Urban Project

Urban Priority Project Hobart, Tasmania
ECEF Priority Areas project
by Vikki Pickering

The focus of the project is students at risk who, for the purposes of this project, we have broadly defined as: “Those students who risk not making a successful transition from school to work”
A Project Management Group of eleven members has been formed to represent all key stakeholders. That is:
- Public and private senior secondary colleges
- Office of Vocational Education & Training (OVET)
- Aboriginal Liaison
- Youth Development Officers including JPET & JPP coordinators
- Office of Youth Affairs
- Disability Services (Ed Dept)
- Industry Community Services ITAB & Business Education Partnership
Advocate (BEBA) from Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce & Industry
- Project Manager for Hobart Education & Business Training Partnership (HEBTP)

The goals of the project were clarified to conduct an audit, using the networks of the management group members, to identify, collect and format for dissemination information on existing services, programs, strategies and resources available in the State and where appropriate nationally for students at risk. Once all information is available then the ‘gaps’ can be identified and recommendations made.

The group members are all working hard using their networks to collect the data and already it is very obvious, as expected, that information well known to one group may be fresh to another.

One of the problems faced by the management group was how to format the data once collected and how to maintain the currency of that information.

Hopefully this problem has been overcome as we have agreement in principle to have a portal on the Office of Vocational Education and Training (OVET) web site. We are presently pursuing this proposal.

We had some delays in getting approval due to the management restructure within OVET, this was finally granted and OVET has been extremely cooperative and supportive. There were also some initial difficulties formatting the web page and we found that the headings have a different 'look' in Explorer and Netscape. Interested parties would be better to view the site through Explorer.

The management group were very cooperative and worked hard to source information on programs, support services and strategies to support youth at risk. The result of all this effort is a database providing names and contact details of organisations and a brief description of the services offered, and the target group. The great advantage of the web page is that the currency of the information can be maintained. The site also provides stakeholders with a 'one stop shop' for information to support our youth at risk.

Final edits are in the process on a report on strategies being used to support the transition of this target group to vocational pathways, on completion this will also be posted to the site.

While initially this project was intended to provide an information source for the Tasmanian southern region the database also includes some entries for the North and North West. OVET has agreed to pilot the site for 2001 and if it proves to be successful then the entries for the North and North West will be expanded.

It is expected to have the site completed and released by Christmas and as soon as this happens I will post the web address on this site.

May 2001
It has finally happened. The web site is up and running! There have been delays due to the change of name of our host from OVET to the Office of Post-Compulsory Education and Training (OPCET) and the reformatting of their web site.
The web address for the Youth at Risk project is: www.opcet.tas.gov.au/vel/hebtp
The Report on Support Strategies for Youth at Risk is also on the site.
